Some pyrs can have 'flyaway' hair on their head and ears - very common on puppies and young dogs. He may start losing it as he gets older. Sometimes they keep a little of it.

Most people don't worry about it. For the show ring it is often trimmed to show off the shape of the head and ears a little more. Not with scissors though - either with thinning shears or a grooming stone/pumice (I use a stone). You don't hack at it - just take a few hairs off at a time so that it continues to look natural. It can be a bit of an art to make it look right though.

Tracy, Lance would no longer look like a pyr when I got done thinning his head fur with a stone Actually, I've never heard of a stone for grooming. I'll have to search the web and see if I can see what one looks like. We'll just let nature take it's course with Lance though. Love your web site. Your Pyrs are beautiful. I used your tip about mixing the shampoo with water when I gave my Schnauser a bath. Why didn't I think of that? Worked great. Thanks

You usually don't have to do the whole head, just the ears. I have used a grooming stone before just, never on Missy. She has fly aways but, she is a mutt and pet first and foremost. The goal of the stone is to keep the dog looking natural and just removing the fly aways but, for most dogs they usually have to focus the most on the ears.

As mentioned you really just do the 'flyaway' bits and for a pet it really isn't necessary.

I use this one as it is good for precise work: http://www.showdogstore.com/chris-ch...ne-3-pack.aspx

But there are ones like this too: http://www.groomersmall.com/acc_kniv...strippingstone

Stones are most often used by terrier people to strip coats.

I used a stone on a Cairn Terrier and an Irish Wolfhound before. I used a little square stone. I didn't know they made those longer pink ones, I know I want to buy now.
