Default Hello....new pyr pup

We got a new Pyr puppy on June 6th. Her name is Ziva and she is now, in a couple days, 7 months old. I researched and researched before we bought her and we are absolutely delighted with her....even when she gets stubborn. We also have two older dogs, Buddy, a 10 year old male lab/chow mix and LittleBit, a 15 year old poodle/terrier mix. We chose a female because Buddy doesn't do well with other male dogs and actually we prefer females. Our GSD mix that died at 16 three years ago was female and about a perfect dog. We almost went with another GSD but became interested in a Pyr and decided that might just be a better fit. I have lurked a bit before registering and have learned so much from all the knowledgable people here. I was thrilled to find a forum with so much valuable information about our wonderful dogs. Things have gone fairly well all things considered and we haven't been too surprised by anything. The one thing we thought we had covered and that did surprise us is that Buddy and Ziva don't get along. We messed up on day one in our introductions and had to scurry to back it up and start over. We do have a crate for Ziva and it has proven invaluable. She gets 2-3 20 minute walks daily and she also plays fetch....surprise there as I was told Pyrs would not, but she loves it and if all else fails I can usually tire her out with a good game of fetch. Ziva seems to be totally like any other Pyr pup of her age I have read about. Buddy was a rescue off the street that my husband took in. He is a fear biter and always has been. My vet seems to think their lack of getting along is purely Buddy's fault and tied into his being a fear biter and his age. Ziva play bows to him and is really interested, but she won't back down if he snaps or growls. He is finally at the stage of ignoring her and will walk by her crate and not even look in her direction. For now we keep them separated in the house for safety's sake. When we can(hubby works out of town and it takes both of us) we walk them together and have no problems. Ziva is always interested and Buddy studiously ignores her. No snapping or growling in about three weeks. So I guess my only question would be advice on how to help them become more sociable with each other and if that proves impossible....well, we have gates and crates!

Welcome.... yep, sounds like buddy, your geratric dog is simply a crochity old man. They are best left alone.

Congratulations on the new family member.

Welcome Zivasmom...looking forward to hearing all about you & your family!!

I agree with Davey, Buddy sounds like he is set in his ways, and not too much is going to change him. He sounds too old to really pick a fight with Ziva, but is letting her know, he is not going to be her playmate. As long as you can separate them when the need arises, and make sure she doesn't pester him too much, the household should be managable!!

I have pics on my camera that I haven't uploaded yet, including some from this weekend when Ziva discovered that TP was a lovely toy. have I said scary smart yet? Like nobody else thinks Pyrs are scary smart, right? I was telling a friend on the phone this morning about Ziva's escapade with the TP, Ziva was laying quietly at my feet. I look up and here she comes with a roll of TP and nonchalantly carries it to her crate to play. LOL Never thought I would have to keep TP under lock and key! I'll see about getting those pics uploaded.

@ Dave.....crotchety old man, ha, ya' think? One can hope right? But yeah, probably best just to let him be and keep them separate or supervised.

Oh, I did remember something I wanted to ask. Is it okay for Ziva to walk ahead of me when we walk? I think I saw that somewhere and I can't remember. Another humorous story involving Ziva. Sunday night I was walking Ziva and Liitle Bit. They get along great and I often walk them together. Well this night Ziva wanted to pull and she usually doesn't so I am of course correcting her for it. I give the leash a snap and stop, usually gets her attention and she will stop and look at me. But this time Everytime she stopped she sat on Little Bit. Poor baby kept looking up at me as if to say, "mom, she is sitting on me again". Never flustered or upset her but try as I might I couldn't keep it from happening. A game for Ziva maybe? So I gave up and took Little Bit back to the house and walked Ziva alone. I'm sure my neighbors were rolling across their living room floors watching that spectacle!

My 7 month old pyr will fetch too, but not like a lab will. After about 6 or 7 times, he is done and will walk away lol. It took a few weeks to teach him to even do that, so I am just going to count myself lucky and let him fetch as little or as much as he wants . Congrats and your new pyr!
