    Question Paralysis ?

    Hello Everyone,

My Great Pyrenees is having problems getting up after laying down to sleep for a while. I need to help him up and then he is able to walk around on his own. Does he has paralysis? If so, what medications can I give him?

    Any suggestions/comments are much appreciated.

    Thank you.

How old is he? Once he is up and moving around, does he have any signs of weakness in his hind legs, or an inability to stand for long?

True paralysis would mean that he would be unable to move the affected body part/s at all. However, you may want to have him looked over by your vet to determine whether his issues are orthopedic in nature, or something else altogether.

    Please keep us posted.

So sorry to hear your boy is having difficulties with his hips. There are many possibilities on the cause. It could be arthritis, it could be neurological, it could be worsening hip dysplasia, or other reasons. Because these conditions are all different, treatment differ also. This is really a question for your vet.

He's about 7 years old, I think. Someone dropped him off near my house (I live in a rural area) and he was wandering around, then just sat in front of the gate and won't leave. I felt sorry for him so I adopted him.

Once I helped him got up, he was able to walk around, no problem, just a little bit slow. He does seem to have weakness in his hind legs. When I tried to groom him, he got tired and wanted to lay down, it was about 20 minutes after I started.

    Thank you.

Not sure where you are in FW, but there are ortho specialists at the DVSC close to where Costco is if you want to see if this is an orthopedic issue.

I took Benson to the vet and she said his joint of the back was dislocated (he was hit by the car that my visitor drove a month ago), also she said she found water in in his lung, and also he has serious bowl issues because of his colon. There wasn't anything could be done to all those issues. Benson couldn't get up after he laid down. He was laying on a comforter and he has to pee and poop while he laid there. I changed the comforter every day so he can have a clean one. I lived in a trailer and his bed was under my trailer. I could hear him barking in pain. And I have to pull him out of his "bed" and helped him walked around. I just felt so bad. It just got to the point that I did not want him to suffer any further. I took him to the vet and asked her to let him go. I cried all those time and I held him with me during the process. I remembered so clearly that the last look on his face towards me, seemed like saying: Thank you, dad, for let me go. I know it's so hard for you to do so, but I will be so much happier when I am gone, and I'll see you soon" It just broke my heart. But I have to do it because I don't want him to suffer any further. I have him cremated and his ashes are in an urn right next to me every day. I missed him so much !
