Default Has anybody ever said something casual abut your dogs that irked you?

Ok, so I tend to be a bit sensitive about my puppies. I don't have kids (yet!) so they're my babies. And I'll admit to being a bit more easily irked lately With midterms coming up I'm stressed and frazzled.

Anyhow, on Sunday we took Ralph for a walk in the conservation area. I know how much he loves stinky woodland areas littered with wild creatures to sniff out. So anyhow, we happened upon a family and their dogs and since Ralph was behaving we chatted for a bit. The little boy with the family was super impressed with Ralph (So cute!) and was asking all kinds of questions about what kind of dog he was. When Pat told him he was a Great Pyrenees, he asked, "Is he one of those dogs that pulls the things in the snow??" And his mom said, "No, that's not what he does." and the little boy seemed a bit disappointed, "Oh.. well he looks like he could be one of those dogs anyways. He's cute! So what does he do?" and before I could really say anything his Mom cut in, "He's just built to look pretty.." and then quickly called the kids and her dogs after her and walked off.

It's probably stupid and petty but it irked me a bit. I almost pulled a Stephanie Tanner ("How rude!" LOL) Pat laughed at me for how long it bothered me. Anyways, I know it's ridiculous but I was bothered by it. I was wondering if anybody else has ever gotten comments that bugged them for whatever reason.

To quote Ron White ... "you can't fix stupid"

We used to get people going off like that, but, it seems to be a much rarer occurrence now.

Maybe because I have developed a 30 second elevator speech about the breed in general and these guys in particular that answers some of those questions up front.

I get annoyed with people when I have Tank out in a crowded place and they ask me if he is mean or if he bites. Really??!!! Do I look like I'm stupid? Why would I bring a big mean dog that bites to the farmers market?

I've been alone for so long... people just in general irk me. I'm just not much of a people person any more, I'm more the poster child for road rage. I think it's best I stick with my dogs.

I sometimes run into people who will ask about the breeds of my dogs, and then argue or flat out deny what I just explained, especially when it comes to my Yellow Lab of all my dogs. They usually walk away muttering something like..."he doesn't even know he has a Golden Lab."

The only encounter that ever really irked me wasn't even a comment but a look. We were in a pet store, when all of a sudden a young girl ran full tilt into Maya's back end and hugged her hard! Maya just looked at me with a WTH look and her ears went back, but that was all the reaction she gave. I took the both of them into the main aisle, downed Maya and showed the little girl how to pet her gently. THAT was the moment that the Dad showed up and snatched the girl away from Maya as if she were about to eat the little girl. I thought "Yeah right man, big hero saving your daughter after everything was calm." She was darned lucky that it was Maya that she ambushed and not some skitish dog who might have snapped.

The funniest one was a woman who got all gooey petting Maya and exclaiming how lovely she was. She asked me what breed Maya was and I explained that she is a Reserve rescue, but we think that she is a Husky/Pyrenees mix. Her hands flew off of Maya as if she had fleas, her nose went into the air and in the snootiest voice I've ever heard said "Oh, she looks too pretty to be a MIX!" LOL, sorry to offend your delicate sensibilities Madame.

Vin, I feel your pain. ABCA (working) Border Collies have no standard, for size, etc, as opposed to AKC. My ABCA BC is on the large side and has a long curly coat. When people ask what he is and I reply Border Collie, they ask if he is pure bred, when I say yes, then they say, well maybe he could be.

I had one of those moments a couple of weeks ago and the comment made wasn't even really directed at my dog.

We were on the trail and came across a man with a greater swiss mountain dog. He and his swissie walked up to me and Bijou (as usual Daddy took Bro a few steps away to the side) and the girls greeted each other politely. I noted that the swissie was exactly the same height as Bijou. The man was looking at the dogs, and then he looked up at me and the very first thing that came out of his mouth was "how much does your dog weigh?" For whatever reason I was a bit surprised. I really shouldn't be because that's such a common question and I've heard it a millions times. I think it may have been the way he asked it, as if that was the foremost and important question he had in his head. I responded, "she's 71 lbs, there's not a whole lot of her underneath that coat." Then he declared to me, indicating his dog, "she's 102 lbs, but she's solid muscle." Sigh... of all the people that I've heard describing their dogs as "solid", 99% of the dogs were overweight, including this swissie. That dog would be much healthier 10 lbs lighter. I kept my mouth shut and moved on. But for some reason that incident bothered me for days afterwards. I just don't get what it is with the fascination of having a dog that weighs a lot, as I have yet to hear people brag about how heavy they themselves are...

Hahahaha...I have to agree with Davey...people in general irk me! The question I get asked most frequently about Maggie which irks me is about her small head. "Will her head ever grow into her body?" sort of questions. I ignore those questions. An incident which happened recently which really set me off was when some of the men on the greenway where I walk started teasing Maggie. I've been working really hard to get Maggie over some of her shyness. Most people respect what I'm trying to accomplish and have stopped sudden moves to pet her or grab at her. There are some older men who I've known for years who can't understand why Maggie is so shy...so they think it's a real hoot to growl, bark, and clap their hands when they see her approaching, just so they can see her run behind me and cower. I told them, "She may be little now, but one day, she's going to be a big dog. She's going to remember how you harassed her as a puppy and will bite your face off....and I'm going to let her!!!" They knew I was joking, but I explained to them how they have undone 5 weeks of work in 5 minutes. They have not done that since.
