Back in November my husband had to take off of work for almost 4 months due to reinjuring an old back injury. He was in tremendous pain all the time; so much in fact that even Oxycontin did not touch his pain. We started noticing that Ratchet was spending a lot more time with my husband and would always sleep/lay near his chair, usually in front of him. We have taught Ratchet that when we sit down and pat our chest for him to jump up on us or rather he will gently put his front paw on our leg and step up and then put his paws on our chest and lean in for a "hug". During this time when Brett would do that Ratchet refused to do it, instead he would go to the side of his chair and put his paws on the arm of the chair and get his "hugs". At first we were kind of baffled about it. Then one day I was coming home (hubby was already home) and as soon as I opened the door Ratchet came tearing through the house barking and growling. This happened a few times, all without further incident; as soon as he heard my voice he was fine. I would just say something like "hey!" or "you better cut that out!" and he was all tail wags and butt wiggles. (Side note: He is not used to Brett being home and ME coming home because hubby is a truck driver and is usually gone a week or two at a time. He sometimes does this when hubby comes home, particularly when the door opening sound startles him out of sleep.)

Anyway after the last barking incident it finally dawned on me that Ratchet was treating Brett like an injured lamb. He realized he was hurt and was keep an extra sharp eye out for him. Hence the lying in front of him (guarding) and refusing to jump on him.

The other story is about them helping me after I was injured. I will share it with you via my blog so I don't have to retype it. :p

Hi! I've had Kenai for over a week now and every night he will start chewing on me! (ouch!) How do I make him understand he cant do that?
I have tried saying "no" or "ouch" and ignoring him but it just is not working. He's been doing it for about 5 days now and I really need to break the habbit. I am getting him a crate today so I can keep him in it at night, but I'm pretty sure he will do the same thing when I play with him. He doesn't just bite when playing, he randomly chews on me. I have him at least 10 chew toys (which he does chew on) but even when I try to distract is biting on me with biting on a toy instead, he still chooses my arm! How do I discourage this behaviour?
Thanks!

Hello everyone! I stumbled on this site and have been scrolling through it for the last hour or so and love how informative it is and how knowledgeable everyone seems. I was wondering if anyone has advice on my Pyr's seemingly random aggression triggers (although I know it's probably not random at all).

His name is Sampson and we got him from a rural shelter in Missouri in January of 2009. The vet estimated his age at 1.5 at the time, so that would make him around 5 sometime this summer. When we first brought him home he was very timid and preferred to be by himself but has turned into a very loving, loyal, and sometimes incredibly needy companion for us. We just love him so much.

The problem is with Sampson and my mother-in-law and a few certain other people. Since day 1 their relationship has been iffy. When she was a young girl my mother-in-law was attacked by a German Shepherd (I think it was actually a police dog, surprisingly), and she just has a fear of large dogs. Our lab she is completely fine with. But Sampson she is nervous around. Especially now, because on Sunday we came back from brunch, we opened our garage door, my husband walked in, his mother was behind him, and I was behind her. Sampson came over to greet us, we were all just standing there talking, and then all of sudden Sampson reared up, started barking at her, and nipped her on the wrist. He didn't break skin, there was no bleeding, but sure scared her to death.

We don't know what happened. 2 days before that she was over and he had his head in her lap. There have been times when she comes over and he growls at her, and other times where he won't leave her alone and wants her to pet him. It's like Jekyll and Hyde!

There have been a few other instances in the past year that have caused us concern. My husband's cousin was over helping us build a deck and Sampson went after him when he was walking with a large file and tore a large hole in his shirt. We blamed it on the power tools and all the people there. Then another time when the neighborhood kids (who play right outside our house and drive Sampson batty) were running down the street, and Sampson got out and went after one. Again, didn't break any skin, but reared up, barking, and nipped the boy on the arm.

Each time this has happened we immediately remove him from the situation and correct him. Then we're pretty much distraught until things seem to go back to normal, we take him out and he's great, my mother-in-law comes over and he paws at her for affection, or my friends with kids come over and Sampson just adores them. I don't know what to do - we definitely keep a close eye on him at all times around people but we don't know what it is that triggers him!

I have posted this on some other forums and people say we need to put him down before he causes some real harm but I'm sorry, I just can't do that right now. We want to try to fix it. Are we just fooling ourselves? Is he just an aggressive dog and there's nothing we can do?

Any input is appreciated. As I typed this he kept putting his head on my laptop.

:(

I know many pyrs are not over-the-top energetic, but I'm starting to get a little concerned about Maggie's lack of energy. She will be one year old in June. She has always been somewhat mellow, but until a month ago, she did have periods of higher activity and played quite a bit with Jazz. For the past month or so, her energy level seems to have diminished.
I take both dogs for a 3 mile walk every morning. Maggie is fairly spunky when we start, but lately she wants to lay down and rest several times during the walk. The temps here have started warming, but aside from one hot week, we're in the mid-70's for daily highs...not that bad. Until recently, when we returned from our walk, Jazz and Maggie would have a raucous play period...not anymore. She eats breakfast, then lays down for a nap. She really doesn't want to go outside to do anything anymore...I have to force her out to pee. She sleeps most of the time. She used to go out for her final pee break of the evening, run the perimeter of the fence doing her "I'm on duty" bark, but not anymore...I make her go out to pee, and she immediately runs back to the door to go inside for bed. She sleeps through the night (always has), and if it wasn't for Jazz wanting to go out in the a.m, I think she'd stay in her crate until 9 a.m every morning.
She was seen by her ortho-vet last week for a final check on her leg and he gave her a clean bill of health. He thought she looked great! I'm just wondering if I need to be concerned about (what seems to me) her lethargy. Should I have blood work done? Or is she just growing up? Is this normal for an 11 month old pyr?

So tonight when we took the boys for a walk Ralph was soooo personable!

I don't know what got into him! I've been trying so hard the last few months to get him more comfortable around unfamiliar people, and usually the closest we get is him sniffing and then promptly ignoring them.

Today we got asked by a few people if they could say hello. We said, "Yes, just let him sniff you good.. He likes to sniff." Well after the sniff this lady went over his head to pet him *cringe* and guess what he did??? He leaned his big ol' fat butt up against her! He was loving them up like no tomorrow.

As we were chatting with the original people who stopped us, two other girls stopped and asked about him and he started pestering them for loving too!!

Triple and quadruple threats, we were stopped by two other groups. A few kids and their mom who loved him up quite vigorously, and then a couple. I'm completely shocked by this sudden change of heart. I don't want to automatically assume he's great now though. I'm almost expecting him to go back to his uncertainty.

On the walk although he was suddenly great with people he did start to focus in on some dogs at a distance and we had a short little reaction. I was surprised at first because I thought we were making much better headway with dogs compared to people. But we did have a bad experience a little while ago which has maybe set him back.

Anyways! Just so thrilled with this little episode and I wanted to share! :D
