Hi All,
My name is Dan Detweiler and my wife, two boys (11 and 5) and I have just become the proud family to not one but two 10 week old G.P. puppies. I am going to try to include a couple of pictures if I can figure out how to do it! If you are interested in the breeder, I will try to provide a link to her site:
www.llamasofatlanta.com
So, go ahead, lay it on me. I am ready to absorb all of the collective wisdom this bunch has to offer me! Maybe it would be best to start small and go from there. How about what to expect and do in the first week or so. We will be picking up the new additions next Sunday and are frantically trying to puppy-proof the house and fenced back yard. I have made an appointment with our vet for Monday to give them a once over. Other than that, what should we expect? Any information you can share with me the better!
Thanks,
Dan
P.S. O.K. I uploaded the pictures but I can not figure out how to attach them to a post. HELP!!!
P.P.S. Oops! After posting it I realized that they attached automaticaly...sorry.

Congratulations Dan,
Now, for the safety of your house and your puppies - hope you already have crates for each puppy, plus a couple baby gates - you will need them - best thing you can do. Also, get your self a book on puppy behaviour - remember these are new babies, they know nothing, so they don't know the difference between right and wrong, and BE VERY PATIENT, as any impatience on your families part toward the new pups will not help the pups.
And, get these two lots of chew toys, they especially love the dog rope chews they sell at the pet store.
I don't expect you'll be getting too much sleep over the next little while :)
Have fun!

As christine said crates are invaluable for the need of potty training your new additions. also a need for new pups is propper food selection. Make sure that you choose the propper food for your pups. right now they will be on puppy food but when you transition to adult food their are key things to be aware of. Even in the puppy food you should read the ingredients, try to avoid things like corn and other non essential filler items such as excess grains as these will not provide many nutrients for your growing puppies. Another ingriedient you should look for is glucosamine. as these are large breed dogs it will be vital to their joint health to stay healthy and it never hurts even at a young age to have this avaliable. If it is not already in the food many companies offer it as a supplement. We added it to our pyrs food at 1 year to help with his growing joints and he is still on it. we currently use nutro large breed with glucosamine. and no it is not on the recall list. Next thing to buy is a good rake brush. Prys need to be brushed and they do shed so a lint roller is also a good investment. Also dont shave your dog, properly maintained coats should be able to disipate heat and protect the sensitive pry skin from sunburn. and last on the shopping list is a nail trimmer. If you are unsure of use ask your vet to demonstrate propper usage. as far as prep goes this is all I can say is needed for the first few months of your new dogs.

Hi Dan, welcome to this site! As you are getting two puppies, your life is going to be REally hectic! We've done the 'two puppy' thing! Always remember that Pyr puppies learn by watching so they will be teaching each other things that you might not want taught. we had one of our puppies teach the other how to open the dog food bins. FUN! Never use harsh treatments on a Pyr puppy; they are crushed with that kind of treatment and will grow up scared anot happy; encourage them with lots of praise, be happy with them and that is how they will grown up. Hopefully you got yourself a male and a female as that is the better choice. Adult, in tact males, especially, once they have matured, will fight and it could get really bad....we've know the males to get into it and as they don't quit, they can be killed. Females can sometimes be testy with each other as well, but they are less likely to fight and I have never heard of any females fighting to the death. Always remember that pyr puppies take a long time to mature. Because of this, it can sometimes be difficult to housebreak them as opposed to some other breeds. It's not that they don't learn or don't know what you want, it's they don't have the muscle control to sometimes hold themselves; be patient. Consider spaying these Pyrs unless you plan on showing and breeding them. Please don't just breed them; breeding a litter of puppies is very expensive, not just in testings and monies spent, but also in time spent. Even with a mother feeding her puppies, puppies are often times supplimented with bottle feedings every 2-4 hours around the clock, to ensure a really healthy puppy. Always feed a high quality dog food; we also give Ester C to our puppies if we see their pasterns dropping. Large breed puppy foods have a tendency to keep puppies from getting any fat on their bodies so we have learned to feed only a high quality puppy food and all of our puppies here have thrived on that. We also add meat in with the kibble. If you would like to visit us on our website its: www.freewebs.com/grendslori If you stop by, please sign our guest book. It's a new website and so some things aren't finished yet. There is a Q&A page which may answer somew questions that you may have as well.
