Bijou ripped a piece out of her rear back pad today. My husband was home at lunch and found her with bloody smears on the left side of her face and limping. As it was clearly a nursing issue, he simply called me and I had to come home to figure out what was wrong (men! ;)) The open wound is on the largest pad on her rear left foot, right in the center. I wrapped it and put a sock on her but there was no way she can take her daily walks with just the sock. So, off we went to find booties for her. We ended up with a brand called "Zack and Zoey". She wore it for some time around the back yard and it didn't slip off. I'll let you know how well it stays on after we take our walk tomorrow moning.

Oh, this is for Vin, was it you that mentioned using the plastic wrap thingy to keep moisture out of bandages? I think I'll be getting a roll of those plastic wraps tonight.

Here she is getting checked out by her brother after she got her booty, the picture is a bit overexposed, but the blood smears are still somewhat visible on her face, around her eyes and on her snout

It's amazing how strong and reziliant dog pads are, and yet how sensitive they can be. Thanks for the tip on the dog boot.

Now you need three more to even things out. :D

Aww, poor girl. :(

She looks like she's taking it - and the bootie - all in stride, though. :)

Ah, yes, we use vet wrap to cover up the gauze/dressing over the wound, and then we used the Glad Press-n-Seal wrap over the vet wrap for the quick potty breaks. This way, keeping the wrapping dry, we didn't have to change out the vet wrap as often.

The booties are a great idea...I had to use them on my German Shepherd to protect her pads and to slow her down (she only had two speeds: stop and 100 mph) - she was always tearing open her rear pads, and breaking her toe bones chasing after the ball.

ad_min81, who knows what Bijou did in the backyard to cut her foot up. We have a lot of debris in the backyard, thanks to the joint efforts of the both of them.

Okay, an update on the bootie. So, on Friday we walked our regular 3 miles and the bootie worked fine, stayed on fine and she walked fine with it. The only thing I didn't think about was that the boot is not waterproof. The dew on the lawns totally drenched the bootie inside and out. But it dried out okay and we walked yesterday in the park mostly on pavement and stayed mostly dry. Today we went out in the afternoon after heavy rain. Bijou was especially hyper after being cooped up in the house and she jumped and ran on the trails, drenching the bootie again. Well, that was the end of that bootie. The sole came off, not designed to take so much water.

I know that some of you were talking about using booties for snow. I don't think the ones I got would be ideal since it gets all wet. Also, Milu had talked about using the bootie to protect Kuma's feet from getting contaminated with the de-icing chemicals the city uses. My type of bootie would offer no protection.

As for Bijou, her foot has healed up quite a lot in the last several days. After her bootie "broke" off I let her run around the tennis court like a nut chasing ball for about 20 mintues (after walk/ran/jump on the trails for nearly 3 miles) and she was fine without the protection of the boot. Did I mention Bijou's hyper...

Does your booty even have a hard bottom like rubber or plastic on them? They are stylish looking booties though on a plus side. Missy will wear clothes but I don't think she will wear a booty.
