A little distraught at this writing as I just had to put down my 6 mo old, Ajax, today for a weird gastric abnormality called intussusception. Disorder is in the gut where the intestine "telescopes", inexplicably folding over on itself, somewhat like folding the cuff of a long sleeve shirt up inside itself again and again, continuing up your arm. Everywhere the intestine folds, it dies and blocks. Horrible symptoms ensue. Surgery was attempted and 1.5 ft of intestine removed. It seemed successful and he rallied but 48 hours later, despite all attempts, his system crashed and he was so feeble we could not in good conscience send him back to surgery again. After euthanasia the vet opened him up to find the cause and, while the surgery sight looked perfect, there was yet ANOTHER intussusception site further down the intestine.

Has anybody out there ever had this happen with their Great Pyrs?

This little guy was the third Great Pyr to die on us before one year old out of the 4 we have bought in the last 2 years. We seem cursed but still LOVE this breed. The first two died at 9 mo and 1 year from complications of Parvo in puppyhood (they came to us from the breeder WITH Parvo, unbeknownst to us....we nursed them through it and thought all was well until other weird symptoms like chronic anemia and wasting began....it was awful). I still have one big strong male left, 1.5 years old, but am just beside myself with grief over this recent puppy's death.
These dogs guard our small flock of Barbados sheep so they work but are still part of our family.
Can anyone shed additional light on this?

Thank you.

Hello,

Sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is very difficult.

To your question, the condition you describe is known, although it is very uncommon for a dog of such a young age. Genetics can play a role as can puppy natal care in the early development of your dog.

It sounds like you may have not chosen the best breeder to experience so many health problems. We generally recommend staying away from backyard breeder unless they shown a good knowledge of the breed and show strong dilegence

If you email me risestar@v3.ca , I will be happy to give you a few reputable breeders. Most offer pet stock for close to the cost of most other breeders and they offer heath guaranteeing and full vaccinations.

Choosing a good breeder is of the utmost importance to ensure a good, strong healthy pup
