I've seen and worked with many breeds, can really say that pyrs are just amazing. What I find incredible is that my boy will protect anything you put infront of him, even a hamster, ferret etc...however he will hunt down mice outside. They are SO versatile, just in the same way retrievers are...People categarize intelligence by how fast a dog learns a command...pyrs just don't give a _____. :o) They are move like wolves... just love the breed...

You are so right...not only do they not give a **** , but they don't care if you know it! Mine pitches a fit if I make her do something she doesn't feel like doing like moving along while walking in the park.....kind of like a temper tantrum. She's got her own agenda about where she wants to go and if I say "No, we're going this way and move it along now..." she does a little dance, stomping around and grabbing at the leash with her mouth. Comical but annoying when you want to get home for the night. Absolutely adore the breed though.

Can they fix the amazing ability to ignore like they do?? If so, I'll make the trip to Canada from Florida!!

Mya was outside yesterday in the 106 deg heat...I don't like to leave her out long when it's so hot... I peek out the window and see her laying in the grass panting... Open the door and call her name and she stares at me and doesn't move. Keep calling her name and all I get is that ... stare "Yeah, I hear ya"

HAHAHA yup, that's a pyr! They educate on respect and communiation, there is somethign you can do to get her in far quicker, but it can't be explained over here! lol My boy comes in and when he doesn't get a verbal correction, then he gets his rear moving, well...mmmmoooooooovvvvvvvviiiiiiinnnnnngggg.Barki ng gets much better, walking etc but the off leash, forget it.

You know, I have tried that "positive reinforcement" thing and have found Queenie does respond better with praise and approval....however, that's IF she feels like it at the moment. These Pyrs are definitely not easy to train to do things a normal dog would do but I guess that is part of the charm of these dogs...independent thinking. If they were easy to adapt to, everyone would own one, right?

I'm just glad Argus is only stubborn, not naughty. For being an untrained 13 month old he's really very good.

When he decides to oppose the leash though, there's not a lot I can do to get him moving. He got partially into the car for a soup bone today though. By next week he should be neuter-trip ready!
