We are adopting a 4 month old stray Pyr next week. We have 4 children under 6, and are putting in a fence for about 1 1/2 acre. We never had a Pyr before, and just curious what anyone thought about them with children, and difficulites with raising a puppy?

Welcome to the pyr world! Well, pyrs are generally known to be great with children. My first pyr was completely trustworthy with kids even though she was raised in a household with no children. On one rare winter day when it snowed here in Texas, we took her to the school down the street to play in the football field. When we got there, we met a father with a young boy less than two years-old. We did not have Fifi on a leash, and she made a bee-line run at the baby - all 80 lbs of her. She stopped dead from a full run about a foot away from the little boy who had his back to her, and then pushed him in the back with her head -- just hard enough to make him lose his balance and fall onto the snow. The father thought it was completely hilarious. It seemed clear that she had that whole thing planned out, and the force with which she pushed the little boy was calculated perfectly to be just enough for his knees to buckle. The smile on her face was priceless...

With a 4-month old puppy and young children in the house, the one thing I would strongly recommend is that the puppy be taught right away about bite inhibition. Those puppy teeth are so extremely sharp and can easily puncture a child's skin. There are many books out there as well as information on the internet about teaching a puppy bite inhibition, you may want to check them out.

We got our Pyr when she was 5 months old. I have a 2 year old granddaughter whom Mya LOVES!! However, she's BIG and clumsy so when she's running after her the granddaughter sometimes gets knocked over. Also, Mya nips at her NOT to hurt her, I think it's just the stage she's in and a type of play. Makes me laugh how this now 6 month old puppy who is the size of a full grown lab THINKS she's the size of a toy poodle!! :D

we just got him on saturday. he has been amazing. he is so calm that we are going to take him to the vet, we are afraid he might be sick. we are just not used to such a calm dog. we think after 1 day he is housebroken. He spend 3 hours the second day at our house chewing on his bone, he is great!!! :)
