View Full Version : They call him the instigator!

Well I took a few hours and got all special forces on my dog. I snuck around and watched her , and saw what she did with her day. She's an angle with all the sheep. Except one.

It's my wether. he was bottle fed and raised with dogs. My LGD will be sitting peacefully on her hill side. Ready to bark and run after anything that moves. Even a leaf!

Well my wether will come up and start to paw at her. If she ignores him his play becomes more rough. Until the dog has to respond.

I about got them broke of the habit. I had to tell the wether no way more than the dog. I got the dog to where she'll just get up and walk away from the wether. So hopefully I solved my problem with the dog playing with the sheep.

On a side note. I bring my blue heeler into the pasture at certain times. And when my LGD is away from the flock I let them play together. This seems to really cut down on how much the LGD wants to play around the sheep. So I'll continue to let the two dogs play together (away from the flock) as long as my LGD lets her is the pasture.

Glad to hear about the progress. Hard to blame the dog when the wether instigates the rough housing. Our wethered goat seems to be the one Cider plays with most often. But he is a lot better with the goats now. He still romps with them now and then but rarely. It's obvious his playfulness is nothing predatory as the herd simply ignores his antics and continues to eat around him as he plays with a goat or two.
I really think he just wants to be part of the herd. The younger goats butt heads and jump around quite a bit. And his romps only last about a minute or two and then he'll just sit down next to the herd and watch them eat. Or chew on a stick or a bone he's found.
I also found that spying on them is the only way to find out how they actually behave while out with the animals. If Cider knows I'm watching he's a perfect gentleman.
Always good to read about another working Pyr. Thanks Hillbilly. And as a side note I spent a couple of years in the Ozarks. Close to Blue Eye Missouri to be exact.
