Hi :)
Has anyone had a problem with their Pyr throwing up after drinking water?
We have had this recient problem of our Pyr drinking, walking away from her bowl and tossing her food and water all over the place
We have moved her dish up on a stool, we thought she might be getting to much air with it on the floor. She still does it. It's not everytime she drinks but it is often.
any words of wisdom?????? Thanks

Is it only after eating? How much food do you give your puppy at feeding times?

She is 7 months old and weighs 70lbs, we feed her 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups in the evening around 5:00 pm, I was thinking maybe this amount of food bloats up too much with the water and causes her to throw up.

If she likes her food and eats it, you can try scatter feeding her, that really slows down how fast she eats.
My boy will throw up water if he is really thursty and then drinks TOO much water, he'll walk and toss it up, just blah. IT's rare though. He's only thrown up food after he's had a bunch of raw food like steak and kidneys, then ate it up again.
Do you know if your line has any gastric torsion / bloat in the familiy?
My boy dances and runs around after he eats, at first we were worried about bloat, but apparently if it's not in the genes, they dont' have a high fat diet and if they eat off the floor it is highly unlikely it will happen. This is what the vet told us and she breeds pyrs.

Hmmm...I've always feed our puppies smaller portions 3-4 times a day until they were about a year old. That's a lot of food at one sitting for a puppy. Keep in mind that the food in her stomach will expand, not to mention the gas that develops a little later, which might be causing her vomiting issues with water. Try smaller portions more often to see if that helps.

Thanks for your input, I'll try feeding her a few times a day to see if that helps. At what age should we change her over to adult food?

...I've never fed puppy food to any of my large breed puppies. Puppy food causes too much growth, too fast. All of my large breed puppies have eaten adult kibble as soon as they were weaned.

yes, I would recommend you switch now to a quality large breed food for pups and keep it until 18-24 months, at which time you can switch to a lower calorie adult formula

Phoenix is now getting Orijen for large breed puppy food, 70% premium animal ingredients, chicken, turkey, fish and eggs-----no animal by-products
30% fruits, vegetables and botanicals--fortified with antioxidents vitamins and chelated minerals, 0% grain.
This food has NO animal by-products,glutens or soy, chemicals preservativs oxides, sulfates, genetically modified ingresients (GMO)
this food comes from Vast Fossil Fields, Alberta so it is also a Canadian made dog food.
We are going to try feeding her 1 1/2 cups in the am and 1/2 in the afternoon and 1 1/2 at supper and 1/2 cup later in the evening to see if that helps her. So she will get her 4 cups a day.

WE just joined this site, Our Rescue Dog Zeus, now five years old had bloat. We knew the signs and caught it. $3500.00 emergency surgery and stiched to the side wall so it won't happen again. Very slow recovery.

I feed my male 7 month old (about 75-80 lbs) 2 cups am 2 cups pm
i havnt had any problems with him throwing up, but i did have to limit him water until about 5 months old because if his dish had water in it he would drink it down then beg for more, he would dig in his water dish like he was trying to dig for water, a big goof. He stopped doing this after about 5 months old. I started feeding him large breed adult food at 6 months. I had no idea about not feeding them puppy food. Curently i feed him Iams large breed, but after reading other posts i am thinking i should be feeding him a better brand?any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. I would like to mix in a wet food for his dinner but i have no clue what brand is best for him.

Well Zeus is one luckly guy to have found you. Knowing what was going on and spending that money. We would have done the same. I have heard of bloat but never seen it and never what to.
I don't think Iams is a bad brand. I just haven't found any dog that liked it. I use Science Diet puppy large breed.
We all must remember that our dog will be eating a lot more because winter is coming on. Here is the last month and half mine have bee going though 40lbs every two weeks. This is between a pyr and Malamute. I don't use wet dog food I put some meat into there dry dog food. I use meat hot dogs (Sams club) or ham slices. :o

hello--i've mentioned before that my joy has to be on a wheat-free food because of allergies, but i do mix it with 1/2 to 1cup of pedigree chicken dog food twice a day because i'm sure an all-dry diet is BORING. i buy a her food at my favorite local privately-owned pet store; it's **** van patten's dog food, but i also like to support a small business, and the nice owner will lift her into the groomer's tub once a month for us! super nice guy, those things really count with me. anyway, **** van patten's allergy-free formula. more $
but seems worth it for her. thinking of having her get a job to pay for her food. :)

Anyone interested in finding out more about premium dog foods might want to check out the following web site. I found it extremely helpful when comparing foods for my Pyr and getting honest reviews for them.
