You measure height from the ground by a front payw up to the peak of their front shoulder. Our Pyr girl is 26" at the shoulder and 95 pounds at nine months of age. Our vet says she will be at the upper end of the spectrum for females, or maybe over standard. That is OK with us as we had no intention of showing her and love our Big Baby Zoe!

Hi

Thanks for the Info. I Adopted Stryder because he needed a home he is my first Pyr I had always rescued Goldens but I found Stryder on the net and fell for him right away.I got him because he was the runt of the litter.
He is about 28 inches and he weighs the last time he was at the vet 75lbs I have not taken him to my vet yet will be in the next couple of weeks just needed a idea on size and weght. The only problem i had was he would not eat kibble and it was the best money good buiy. I fouynd he was raised on Raw Food so I found a supplier near my and now I hope he will put on some weight lost some I thionk when he was on kibble.

Hi Len,

How old is your dog now? 27-32" is the standard 100-130lb is the general weight. Your dog sounds awfully thin. Mine is 27" and 83bls but still growing. He is an extremely fussy eater. We have him on raw with occasional kibble for variety, and finally found a food he enjoys. A 27" dog should be 100lbs at maturity. You want the dog to be proportionate and balanced, that's important with Pyrs, among other breeds. To measure your dog, you have to make sure he is standing straight and measure him from his (front) paws up to the shoulder. Vets have a metre stick thing that they use to be accurate.

By the way, Pyrs are NOTHING like goldens if you've found that out already! They are much harder in some ways :o) and are definelty a challenge, especially when you get stuck with a dominant one that doesn't eat much.

If you want more details, visit the akc website and look under great pyrenees. I'm from Canada and our standards are slightly different. We do not disqualify a dog for being under the minimum size up to two inches.

Good luck!!!

Len,

My dog spits out hot dogs and only likes cheddar cheese. I have him on nature's variety raw beef. He seems to like the kibble and raw. You can try that. I feel for you. This is the first food he has taken to with 'excitement'. I use the term excitement loosely!

I live in Toronto, I'd love to live where you live!
